Fine Artist, Designer & Teacher
Heather (Hofstetter) Montgomery
Born and raised in the small town of Monson, Massachusetts, my artistic interests ran wild at a young age. I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, where I studied with excitement, all that the art world has to offer including; graphic design, illustration, sculpture, jewelry metals, drawing, painting, and printmaking, all in search for my own personal calling. I was even given the incredible opportunity to embark on a study abroad to Nocciano, Italy in 2010, where I lived with a wonderful family, entirely submerged in the rich culture, beautiful language, and awe-inspiring landscapes.
Upon graduation I was consumed by an overwhelming need for personal identity and purpose. I felt I really wanted to make a difference through my art as well as assist others in discovering their expression through art making. And so, I decided to enroll in the University's post-baccalaureate program to obtain my license to teach Visual Art to students in PreK through 8th grade. During which, I fulfilled my practicum at Fall River Public schools as well as coordinated an after school program, integrating English language arts and Math into creative activities for Elementary students in the inner-city area.
Yet, being a mountain girl at heart, I have spent much of my time traveling and living in different areas of the U.S. I now work as a freelance artist, painting teacher, and Graphic Design Instructor at North Idaho college. This has given me the opportunity to meet as well as work with many different types of people, all with their own interests, passions, and energy.
With regards my personal artwork, I intend to embody this energy and personality. I feel charcoal allows me to gesturally capture what I experience when I look deeper into the movements of the figure in attempt to expose the true nature and beauty, whereas paint allows me to enhance and invent expressive moments and colors in an object or scene. I aim to instill feelings that surface when I am within a space, a space that is lived in, where happy memories were shared. I introduce many different styles, constantly taking on new projects, both in the Fine Art and commercial realms. However, in all of my artful experiments I hope to encourage the viewer to look meaningfully into the world around them. For endless magnificence, curiosity, and optimism can be found in the simplest of things.
